Players undertaking the Road to Freedom quest must follow a trail of historic landmarks to uncover a secret entrance. Understanding how the trail works and solving the wall cipher is essential for completing this crucial storyline objective.
Starting the Freedom Trail Quest
The quest begins at Boston Common near the Park Street Station. Here, players discover a red line embedded in the sidewalk that guides travelers through the historic city streets. Following this marked path leads players past several prominent post-war ruins and key landmarks.
Along the route, players will spot circular metal markers stamped with numbers and letters. These clues piece together the final combination needed to open the hidden door. While following the path, stay alert for hostile raiders and ghoul ambushes scattered throughout the ruins.
Locating the Freedom Trail Ring
The red path eventually leads directly to the Old North Church. Descending into the church basement brings players to a dead end featuring a large circular wall dial known as the Freedom Trail Ring. This mechanism acts as the final security check to access the secret headquarters.
The dial consists of an outer ring with letters that spins clockwise and counter-clockwise. To input a letter, players must align the correct character with the red indicator marker at the top. Pressing the center button locks in each selected letter.
Solving the Puzzle Code
The code required to solve the puzzle is RAILROAD. Players must spell out this eight-letter word in exact sequence using the rotating dial. Spin the ring to highlight 'R', press the center button, and then repeat the process for each subsequent letter.
If you enter an incorrect letter, the puzzle resets and you must start spelling the word again from the beginning. Once entered correctly, the stone wall swings open to reveal the entrance to the Railroad base. Players are then free to meet Desdemona and advance their faction storyline.
Bypassing the Walkway Search
Interestingly, players do not actually need to visit every marker along the trail to open the door. If you already know the password, you can travel directly to the Old North Church at any time. Entering RAILROAD on the dial opens the door regardless of quest progression.
